«Iceman is» is the name of the worlds first ice cd which where released in 2002. Ten years later we gather the musicians from that recording.

The music will probably not be the same, this is improvised music in a world of ice-sounds. Everything can happen. Both instruments and the music is new.

Arve Henriksen: Ice-trumpet, ice-horn, ice-percussion and vocal (N).
Hilmar Jensson: Iceguitar and electronics (Island).
Lena Willemark: Vocal (Sverige).

Each year Ice Music Festival Geilo creates a new ice-instrument. We have had: iceridoo, isleik, ice udu, iceguitar, icefiddle, icelur and, iceophon and more. This years instrument is an Cellis (ice-cello). We do think this is the worlds first cello made of one piece of naturally frozen ice.

What would it sound like?

Leo Svensson Sander will give us the answers. Together with the amazing singer Lena Willemark they will put up a unforgettable and unique concert.

The combination of ice and swedish folk music, performed by world topp class artist will be something worth the visit.

During the traditional midnight concert Isungset will peform the music from his latest album «winter songs». This is the project which Isungset the last year has taken around the world. Norway, Germany, England, Australia, Japan, Finland, India, Holland, England (Somerset House 10 sold out concerts) is some of the places he has performed «Winter Songs» during 2011.Coming up is collaboration with the London Symphonie Orchestra`wind ensemble and Trondheims solistene (N).

One senses a certain froideur...In fact, Isungset is that rare thing: an ice musician, who writes songs about winter and plays them on ice instruments (ice horn, ice harp, icefone...). They are sung by fellow Norwegian Lena Nymark as if breathing loudly. Occasionally, you hear an ice guitar or ice Hardanger fiddle. To listen is to watch frost form. It is still, barely melodic, thinly harmonic and always, always chilly. Fans of Bjork's Vespertine will certainly get it.

Percussionist Terje Isungset is one of those Norwegian musicians who can make beguiling sound out of almost anything: oil rigs, wood, stone. Over the past decade, he has concentrated on instruments made of ice, sculpting and cutting drums, marimbas, chimes and other percussion instruments from one of the purest materials ? frozen water from ancient lakes. The only added elements are air and electricity: live vocals and expert amplification.

"This is not the easiest way to make music," he comments ruefully as he introduces the final pieces. Isungset is playing a series of nine concerts in a temporary geodesic dome beside Somerset House. It's cold, and the crowd has wrapped up warm, but it's nothing like the freezing temperatures in Geilo, where Isungset founded the world's first ice music festival.

As a consequence, his instruments are melting, and a crew member who brought the gear by refrigerator lorry from Norway is busy taking instruments on and off stage, returning them to their freezer boxes after each number.

Yet visual spectacle aside, Isungset makes fascinating music ? it's not the sound art or ambient abstraction you might expect. Pure-toned singer Lena Nymark adds wordless vocals: folky, pentatonic motifs on New Day and a longer, more chromatic line that reverberates across Isungset's four-note ice marimba riffs on Mellom Fjell, a tone poem about the awe felt surrounded by high mountains and deep water.

On the closing Global Ice, a Nobel prize ceremony commission, Isungset picks up the wonderfully odd-looking ice trumpet, and produces a roar that soars across looped and pre-recorded ice percussion ? an abrasive, primeval sound that's far from ice-clear, but magnificent in its madness.

This is a part of Terjes new instrument: an "Sørpolofon". It is from the central part of Antarctica! The ice is 100 till 150 years old, from the days Roald Amundsen was walking on the Pole.

New instruments out of glass wil be made for the concert taking place in December 2011.The closing act of Tallinn 2011. There are 15 glass artists working on this project.

The second band of the evening was the duo of Per Jorgenson and Terje Isungset from Norway, who were playing in a summer context and hence without the Isungset's seasonal utilization of the great natural material of his native Norway—ice. Typically this adds great visual appeal to his music, reinforcing the eerie trance-like atmosphere which the show induces. The music may be improvised, but the structures are well established after years of collaboration. Jörgenson has been involved in Jon Balke's different ensembles, and has also recorded with composer Michael Mantler on The School of Understanding (ECM, 2001) and the Swedish bassist Anders Jormin on Jord (Dragon, 1995). His open ended experimental style has surely had an influence on the younger trumpeters in his country, like Arve Henriksen and Mathias Eick, though more in his exploratory attitude than in any technical realm. In fact on the basis of this performance, it was his vocalizing, as well as percussion and general joy of performing that proved his greater creative strengths. At one point, having earned some applaud from the audience, he turned the appreciation back to the crowd encouraging them to continue in order that he could use this as rhythmic input in his own playing.

Turning an audience's excessive reverence into a performing tool is a welcome approach to the hushed scrutiny that exudes from many experimental stages. Terje Isungset too has also been influential in his innovative approach to percussion, incorporating in his music the sounds of everything from tapped or scraped stones and ram horns to a variety of suspended dried branches. More importantly he reveals an apparent pleasure in the demands that the intensity of their interaction requires, turning at times to the audience when Jörgenson seemed to overstretch the bounds of credibility, and utilizing their bemusement. The duo's power is in their ability to lead the listeners into a highly abstract acoustic world and communicate their own efforts to navigate the creative hurdles they meet.

Anmeldelse i Klassekampen:
Christian Houges fotografi «Antenna- forest» utgjør en sentral del av «Ild og Vann». Fotografiet er tatt på Svalbard og er en del av serien «Arctic Techno- logy». Houges poetiske vinterland- skap er montert i samme rom som perkusjonisten Terje Isungsets lydinstallasjon «Winter Songs», og de to arbeidene kler hverandre på en helt spesiell måte. De vekselvis rungende og glassklare klangene Isungset får ut av sitt spill på instrumenter laget av is, skaper sammen med synet av snølandskapet fra Spitsbergen en følelse av å stå ovenfor et ubegripelig, stort og overveldende rom. Naturens vintertilstand er bearbeidet på en overbevisende måte! Lest som et sinnbilde, minnet Houges fotografi meg, for øvrig, om en aforisme av Henri Michaux, som jeg leste for over tyve år siden: «I mangel på sol, forsøk å modne under isen».
Jeg kan ikke huske noen gang – verken før eller senere – å ha fått et bedre råd enn dette. For personer som midlertidig er satt ut av spill, altså de menneskene Kunstvisitten er ment for, antar jeg at det å få brakt til seg næringsrik kunst kan være av avgjø- rende betydning. Kunstformidler Kirsten Mørck fortjener heder og ære for sin vedvarende innsats på området!

– Det fine med å jobbe med is er å se at mennesker har lite å stille opp med i den store sammenhengen. Å kjenne at vi er små, sier Terje Isungset. Som fortsetter å spille på instrumenter av frosset vann.

Terje Isungset gir ut sitt nye album «Winter Songs» om to uker. Hans sjette der han bare bruker instrumenter av frosset vann. Plata kommer ved neste fullmåne, siste helga i januar, samtidig som han igjen spiller på Ice Music Festival på sitt fødested Geilo. Han har selvfølgelig ikke noe mot at det har vært svært kaldt i det siste.

– Nei, jeg synes det er deilig, jeg. Det gjelder bare å ta på seg gode klær og være i aktivitet, sier Terje Isungset.

Han forteller at instrumentene av is låter bedre jo kaldere det er. Når temperaturen nærmer seg null blir de naturlig nok vanskeligere å håndtere.

God klang
Den britiske avisa The Guardian skrev i forrige uke en forhåndsomtale av isfestivalen og den nye plata. Med begeistrede begreper som «cool classics», «strange warmth» og «shivers down my spine». Isungsets prosjekt har vakt internasjonal oppsikt de ti årene som er gått siden det startet.

Arbeidet med instrumenter av is begynte med et bestillingsverk til Vinterspillene på Lillehammer i 2000. Der kombinerte perkusjonisten is med vanlige instrumenter.

– Klangen var helt vidunderlig. Det låt så vakkert og unikt at jeg ville jobbe videre med dette, forklarer han.

– Jeg fikk en idé om å lage sju CDer, en serie med forskjellige uttrykk. Den siste kommer neste år. Den blir kun solo-is, mens den som kommer nå er så mangfoldig som mulig i forhold til de stramme grensene isen setter. Jeg har med isgitar, ishardingfele, stemmer og sangkor. Den er mer variert i klangene enn de forrige.

Viktig ressurs
Terje Isungset skjærer selv ut instrumentene sine med kniv. Hvordan lager han ei hardingfele av is?

– Kroppen er av is. Jeg har brukt vanlige strenger og stemmeskruer. Det er Nils Økland som spiller på den, forteller Isungset. Han har også med Sissel Walstad på harpe, Espen Jørgensen på gitar, Lena Nymark som sanger og St. Hallvardguttene.

– Jeg lar andre spille på strengeinstrumentene. Jeg har så godt som utelukkende spilt på frosset vann selv. Det er en stor ære å få spille på verdens viktigste ressurs.

Plata er tatt opp under forrige isfest på Geilo, og i en isdom i Val Senales i Italia, på en isbre 3.000 meter over havet. Isungset kommer til å fortsette å gjøre slike iskonserter, også etter at han er ferdig med å lage plater med denne materien.

Låner fra naturen
– Alle instrumentene som blir brukt er laget fra gang til gang. Jeg har en frysehenger som jeg kan turnere med, men på platene er alle instrumentene nye. Jeg bruker aldri samme instrument på to plater. Det er hele poenget, sier Terje Isungset.

Med dette konseptet er det naturlig at han er mer enn gjennomsnittlig bekymret for klimaendringene.

– Jeg har alltid vært opptatt av klimaet. Det er en viktig del av budskapet mitt. Det ligger som en kommentar i musikken. Med et perspektiv som er viktig. Jeg låner instrumentene fra naturen, og leverer dem tilbake etter bruk. Det setter ting i perspektiv. Jeg gjorde en konsert i Svartisen, der jeg fikk et ishorn som var 2.500 år gammelt. Jeg spiller på det, og så er det borte. Det minner oss om hvor kort tid menneskene lever, i forhold til hvor lenge jorda eksisterer.

Purcell and Vivaldi are all very well, but it's a modern, avant-garde Norwegian who sends shivers down my spine

Snow, ice, and frost music. We can do better than Debussy's The Snow is Dancing, than Rimsky-Korsakov's The Snow Maiden or Vivaldi's Winter from The Four Seasons, better even than Purcell's Frost Scene, George Benjamin's A Mind of Winter, or Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen's Schnee (er, Snow), to give just a few highlights of frost-nipped classical music (even if the Abrahamsen, if you haven't heard it, is music of coruscating glacial brilliance).

But Norwegian musician and composer Terje Isungset takes the idea of ice-music to its logical, literal conclusion. He makes instruments out of ice – and, yes, I know it's cold out there everywhere from Cape Wrath to Cornwall, but if you can make British versions of Terje's ice-blocks, glocks, and horns while you're waiting for the AA to rescue you in a layby on the M3, then I want to see and hear the evidence.

And you haven't had enough of the snow by then, Terje plays the Icemusicfestival in Geilo, in the Norwegian highlands between Oslo and Bergen, at the end of January. But if you can't get out of the house to get to Scandinavia, stay in and warm yourself with Terje's new album, Winter Songs. For all their millennia-old origins in the glaciers of Norwegian uplands, Terje's ice instruments have a strange warmth, and a serene, haunting beauty. And maybe if this cold snap continues much longer, I'll be able to turn my pond into an ice-xylophone.

Terje Isungset "Hibernation" Label: A very special album from the Northern part of Norway by Ice-musician Terje Isungset. He started to play on instruments made out of ice exactly ten years ago and the first album with ice music was released by him two years later. In the past ten years he has, together with other musicians, created instruments such as the ice-guitar, iceridoo, ice-fiddle, ice-horn, ice percussion instruments an many others. On this newest album he plays the percussion, horn and iceofon. He is joined by Sara Marielle Gaup who does the joik and on the first track there is also a iceridoo playing along. Hibernation is a fragile album with wonderful sounds in a minimalistic landscape. The combination of the instruments and Gaup her joik is perfect like in Eadni vuohttu máná but I also like Polar night where Isungset is singing with is more earthy voice. Denne gangen har musikken fokus på et samisk uttrykk og sammen med joikeren Sara Marielle Gaup og han selv på isperkusjon, ishorn, isofon og stemme, tar Isungset oss med til steder neppe noen av oss har vært før. På det første av de tolv sporene får de hjelp av Eilif Gundersen på ishorn og Peter Paelinck på isdidgeridoo og med eller uten assistanse, så skaper de stemninger så trolske, varme og spennende som vel tenkelig.
Terje Isungset har maktet å skape et musikalsk univers nok en gang med evnen til å forføre alle med åpne ører og andre åpne sanser.
